Six hundred Chromebooks, counted before the first day of school
A charter school in Colorado Springs couldn't say how many laptops came back each May. Two days on site in July, and a register tied to students, settled it.
This shows the kind of work we do. It is not a client engagement, and the business in it is invented.
- 612Chromebooks tagged and tied to a named student
- 31missing devices turned up by the July audit
- 3access points in the gym, where one had been trying to serve two classes
Where it started
The problem
Chromebooks went out in August and came back in May. Most of them, anyway. Nobody knew how many, because the inventory was a spreadsheet three people edited.
And in the first week of term, the gym Wi-Fi gave out every time a class tried to sit a state practice test in there.
What changed
What we did
Every device is enrolled in Google's admin console with an asset tag, and the tag belongs to a student rather than a spreadsheet row. A device that isn't handed back in May locks remotely and asks to be returned to the front office.
We spent two days on site in July auditing the stock. Thirty-one devices were missing, eleven of them since the year before.
The gym needed more access points and a channel plan, not a faster internet line. We mounted three on the ceiling over the summer break, and the next practice test ran with a full class signed in.
During term we're on a recurring contract. Teachers raise tickets through a form, and anything that needs hands on hardware gets a visit inside the week.
